Children have nightmares for the same reasons adults do. There really is no way to stop it. Could maybe try to calm him down by asking him what was scary and explain to him that it wasnt real and nothing is going to harm him- if hes old enough. It does suck to see kids cry from nightmares and sometimes you cant do a thing about it other than comfort them. Just dont make it a thing where you or an adult holds him or stays by his side the whole time he's awake or you'll run into bigger problems- Good luck!

Dreams are the minds way of dealing with stuff, and when you are little you are constantly learning how to do new things, learning to deal with your emotions, beginning to use your imagination, and starting to learn about fear, and all of this comes out in your dreams as a nightmare. Sometimes it can be from scary things on the tv, or in books, maybe even hearing your parents have an argument can be enough. You are wonderful for being so worried about your brother!

For the same reason that people of all ages have nightmares; the unconscious mind is alerting us to issues that need our attention. Children lack the insight to make use of the symbols in their dreams, unfortunately, and experience nightmares as emotional realities. There is plenty to be spooked by in life, so the best way to help a child through a bad patch is to double up on the praise and reassurance. It works for grown ups as well, so hug yourself and say "I love you!!"
