Why does my cat's muscle spasm when he is relaxing

How do you know the muscle spasms are not from dreaming? Cats dream all the time.Other than that, I couldn't tell you. I had a cat several years ago (who is now gone) that would get muscle twitches on his back. But that was while he was awake and it would drive him nuts. He would run around the apartment and lick the spot.But I was never able to find out why.He was later diagnosed with diabetes and passed on several months later even though he was getting treatment.
