Default Is insomnia just a temporary affliction? Or, once set in, is diificult to get rid of?

For someone who never ever had trouble wandering into dreamland once her head hits the pillow, this new development is perplexing. Any suggestions (short of taking pills) to combat the situation would be welcome...Thank you.
