Sleep, Mood and Bipolar Disorder. Lack of Good Sleep and Effects on Mood Disorders.

Lack of Good Sleep and Effects on Mood

The following will affect your emotions, daily body rhythm and mood by affectiong your sleep:

  • alcohol
  • drugs
  • stress
  • noise
  • irregular sleeping times

Irregular living schedules and sleeping times can aggravate mood disorders and play with your emotions.

An old-fashioned sanitarium cure that included rest was effective with the "nervous", since it put the patient on a regular schedule of sleep, activity, and meals.  We have included sleep disturbances that can make your mood disorder even worse or aggravate your symptoms.

Insomnia, Moods, and Emotions

Insomnia sufferers have difficulty initiating or maintaining normal sleep. This results in non-restorative sleep and imparis mood and daytime functioning.

Insomnia includes the following:

  • Too little sleep
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Awakening from sleep often
  • Waking early
  • Being unable to get back to sleep

These sleeping problems and insomnia can also be characteristic of many mental or physical disorders.

For example, depressed individuals may experience overwhelming sadness, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or even guilt. These overwhelming feelings all can interrupt sleep.

Hypomanics on the other spectrum may be aroused to such a degree that getting quality sleep may be almost impossible without medication or relaxation techniques.
